Author Ruskin Bond was recently spotted at one of the cafes of Dehradun recently during the launch of his book. The author engaged in an interactive session with young Doonites and book lovers of the city and shared his memories of Doon and Mussoorie.
Mussoorie, a popular travel destination, is frequented by tourists from all over the world, often, overcrowding the city. Bond said, “The number of tourists visiting Mussoorie has increased in the past few years. There are too many cars, often leading to long hours of traffic jam. The place has become overcrowded.”
Talking about the changing landscape of Dehradun, Ruskin Bond added, “Over the years, the population in Doon has also increased, thanks to rapid urbanisation. It has become more prosperous but some major civic issues have cropped up in the city , lack of cleanliness being a major problem. At many places, one can see rubbish and litter strewn all around. It is disheartening and it spoils the impression of a city – when you are greeted with rubbish and dirty streets instead of beautiful trees.”
He added, “We must take a little more interest in taking care of our surroundings, and more so, in growing cities like Dehradun.Otherwise, I think these cities are still beautiful and the mountains here have their own charm; I can only hope that things will get better with time.”
